Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten

One of our primary goals at Cypress Oaks School is to prepare our students academically for the challenges of elementary school. Kindergarten isn't what it used to be, and children who have not been exposed to academic skills and concepts as a preschooler may struggle and have a difficult time keeping up with his/her peers. We've included some links to let you know what Polk County kindergarten teachers expect their students to have a handle on before they come to kindergarten.

What is VPK?

All of Florida’s four-year-olds are eligible to participate in the Voluntary Prekindergarten Education Program (VPK) regardless of family income.

Children born between 9/02/02 and 9/1/03 can participate in the 2007-08 school year or the 2008 summer VPK program.

Parents or guardians must register in person and bring proof of child’s age to a VPK registration location. Call the VPK Office at (863) 413-9890 for details or visit the Polk Early Learning Collation website to find out where to apply.

This program is free and offers all eligible children access to a quality early learning experience.

Why take part in VPK?

· VPK is free to all of Florida’s 4-year-olds

· VPK helps Florida’s 4-year-olds develop the skills they need to become good readers and successful students

· All VPK instructors must meet quality standards required by Florida Law

· VPK offers an extensive school year program and a limited summer program

· VPK provides children a strong foundation for success in education and life
